Pet Food Recall (December 2011)

Recall on some pet food. Iams, River Run, Dog Power and Marksman so far.

See FDA U.S. Food and Drug Administration List of Recalls, Market Withdrawals & Safety Alerts HERE

"Some of these fungi (primarily Aspergillus flavus) produce the very lethal mycotoxins called aflatoxins. Aflatoxins are remarkably potent, often causing disease even when ingested in minute amounts. Aflatoxins can cause disease throughout the body, but are most commonly known for causing acute or chronic liver disease and liver cancer" per www.wellvet.com

Proctor & Gamble Recalls Iams Dry Dog Food

Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food has been recalled due to higher than acceptable aflatoxin levels.

December 8, 2011 – Updated December 16, 2011

The Procter & Gamble company has voluntarily recalled a single production lot of dry dog food due to aflatoxin levels that were detected above the acceptable limit.

The affected product is Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food with Use By or Expiration Dates of Feb. 5 or Feb. 6, 2013. The seven-pound bag has a Code Date of 12784177I6 and UPC Code of 1901402305. The eight-pound bag has a Code Dates of 12794177D2 and 12794177D3, and UPC Code of 1901410208. The 17.5-pound bad has Code Dates of 12794177K1 and 12794177K2, and UPC Code of 1901401848.

The product is said to have been distributed to Pennsylvania, but it already has been retrieved from store shelves. No illnesses have been reported in association with this production lot to date, and no other Iams pet food products are involved.

Cargill Animal Nutrition’s River Run and Marksman dry dog foods also have been recalled for the same problem, but they were not distributed in Pennsylvania.

Consumers who purchased the product listed should stop using the product and discard it and contact Iams at 1-866-908-1569 or visit www.iams.com for a replacement voucher.

Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring by-product from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities. Pets that have consumed this product and exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should be seen by a veterinarian.

Adopt a Pet This Christmas… Or Give Someone a New Friend for Christmas (or Hanukah)!

15 December 2011

The holidays are a popular time to get your children the pet they’ve always wanted. Who can resist a adorable puppy or kitten with a bow under the Christmas tree? If you are thinking about getting a pet this year, I encourage you to adopt a pet for under the tree instead of buying one. There are a lot of benefits of adopting a pet over buying one from a pet store. For some reasons why, please look at THIS ARTICLE. Pets can come from anywhere, but I also recommend not picking a pet that is coming from a non-reputable breeder or puppy mill. For more information about what puppy mills are, please check out THIS ARTICLE.

A great way to give a pet , unless you know the person really well, is take the person you are getting the pet for to the shelter, rescue or store and let them chose the pet they want.  Sometimes that is not possible… Sometimes if it for your child your input is the final choice Or sometimes you know grandma or grandpa would love a pet or needs one and taking them just won’t work out, so each situation is different.  But if you can take them for a pre-visit and to actually to the picking out it is ideal. If now choose a pet they would want, rather than one you want.  And then adopt just one more for yourself, if you possibly can.

And if you are a pet lover, please donate funds and supplies or volunteer your time to local rescues and shelters or consider fostering or taking a pet home for the holidays… and then helping find them a permanent forever home.

Adopt (or rescue) just one more pet and you are not only saving a life but enhancing yours… or that of a friend, family member or just a lonely soul.  Those of us who have pets know that loving an animal and having them love you awakens a part of your soul that changes your life forever!

With today’s economy and plus the return of pets to the shelter of people who think animals are toys there are more pets who need homes than ever before.

Pawliday Flier 2011 231x300 Adopt a Pet This Christmas!

The good news is that there are so many places to adopt a pet these days! There are also many pets on Facebook and other websites where you can “shop” for the perfect pet for you and your family. And, there’s a ton of amazing resources such as local rescues and shelters, adoption events in the area, and stores that are adopting out rescued pets if people don’t want to go to the shelter.

One of these adoption events is happening this Saturday, December 17th at the OC Animal Care at 61 The City Dr. in Orange from 10am-2pm. This “Paliday Adoption Event” is sponsored by The Desperate Paws of Orange County Dog Club. You can get a $50 discount on all adoptions at this event! For more info visit their WEBSITE or call (714) 935-6848.

Other good resources for information about pet adoption:

  • Best Friends Animal Society – Right now Best Friends is offering free air travel from the sanctuary to people who want to adopt their pets. They will be flown to your local airport by the 22nd plus all adoption fees are also waived if you want to adopt a “senior pet.” For more information about this program, go HERE.
  • Petfinder and Adoptapet are two terrific resources to search all adoptables at local rescue groups – the cool part is that on Adoptapet you can save your search and plug in your email and they will email you when pets that match your search come up

Adopt and Shop – An amazing new “pet store” with shelter animals in Lakewood. They get all pets from the SEEACA animal shelter in Downey. Here’s the best part: adoption counselors are available to help match you with the perfect pet for your family. Your new pet will come complete with leash/collar or food, litter etc. All vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered and can go home that day! I am not sure about the prices so you will need to call them but will average around $100 compared to the thousands for a pet store puppy with no vaccines, microchip, supplies, counselors, after adoptions support and spay/neuter. Can Cold Water Clean Dishes?

This is for all the germ conscious folks
who worry about using cold water to clean.
John went to visit his 90-year-old grandfather
in a very secluded, rural area of Saskatchewan
After spending a great evening chatting the night away,
the next morning John’s grandfather prepared
breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast.

However,
John noticed a film like substance on his plate,
and questioned his grandfather asking,
‘Are these plates clean?’
His grandfather replied,
‘They’re as clean as cold water can get ’em.
Just you go ahead and finish your meal, Sonny!’
For lunch the old man made hamburgers.

Again,
John was concerned about the plates,
as his appeared to have tiny specks around
the edge that looked like dried egg and asked,
‘Are you sure these plates are clean?’
Without looking up the old man said,
‘I told you before, Sonny, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them.
Now don’t you fret, I don’t want to hear another word about it!’

Later that afternoon,
John was on his way to a nearby town and as he was leaving,
his grandfather’s dog started to growl, and wouldn’t let him pass.
John yelled and said,

‘Grandfather,
your dog won’t let me get to my car’.
Without diverting his attention from the football game
he was watching on TV, the old man shouted!
‘Coldwater, go lay down now, yah hear me!’

Meet Coldwater!

World’s Oldest Dog Dies At Age 26….Requiescat in pace

Posted on December 6, 2011by Ad rem

Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened. ~ Anatole France

A male cross-breed dog, Pusuke, is seen in this file photo from Dec. 24, 2010.

(ABCNews)…Pusuke, listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest-living dog, died in Japan on Monday. He was 26 years old — or somewhere between 117 and 185 in “human years,” according to various calculations. There is no official method for converting dog years to human years.

The dog’s owner, Yumiko Shinohara, said the male cross-breed died at Sakura in the Tochigi prefecture, north of Tokyo, according to the Kyodo news agency.

Pusuke was reportedly eating well and staying active until Monday, when he lost his appetite and had difficulty breathing. Pusuke died peacefully, minutes after his owner returned home from a walk.

“I think (Pusuke) waited for me to come home,” she said, according to Kyodo.

Born in April of 1985, Pusuke was recognized last December as the world’s oldest-living dog.

The oldest-known dog on record, according to Guinness, was an Australian cattle dog named Bluey, who lived to the ripe old age of 29 years and five months before it was put down in November 1939.

Senate Approves Bill that Legalizes Sodomy and Bestiality in U.S. Military

Has American Really Fallen This Far?FRC President Tony Perkins

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins. (AP photo)

(CNSNews.com)(Updated) The Senate on Thursday evening voted 93-7 to approve a defense authorization bill that includes a provision which not only repeals the military law on sodomy, it also repeals the military ban on sex with animals – -or bestiality.

On Nov. 15, the Senate Armed Services Committee had unanimously approved S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act, which includes a provision to repeal Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

Article 125 of the UCMJ makes it illegal to engage in both sodomy with humans and sex with animals.

It states: "(a) Any person subject to this chapter who engages in unnatural carnal copulation with another person of the same or opposite sex or with an animal is guilty of sodomy. Penetration, however slight, is sufficient to complete the offense. (b) Any person found guilty of sodomy shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said the effort to remove sodomy from military law stems from liberal Senate Democrats’ and President Obama’s support for removing the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy.

“It’s all about using the military to advance this administration’s radical social agenda,” Perkins told CNSNews.com. “Not only did they overturn Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, but they had another problem, and that is, under military law sodomy is illegal, just as adultery is illegal, so they had to remove that prohibition against sodomy.”

Perkins said removing the bestiality provision may have been intentional–or just “collateral damage”

“Well, whether it was inadvertent or not, they have also taken out the provision against bestiality,” he said. “So now, under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), there’s nothing there to prosecute bestiality."

Former Army Col. Bob Maginnis said some military lawyers have indicated that bestiality may be prosecutable under another section of the military code of justice – the “catch-all” Article 134 for offenses against “good military order and discipline.”

But don’t count on that, he said.

“If we have a soldier who engages in sodomy with an animal – whether a government animal or a non-government animal – is it, in fact, a chargeable offense under the Uniform Code? I think that’s in question,” Maginnis told CNSNews.com.

“When the reader stops laughing, the reader needs to ask the question whether or not this is in the best interests of the government, in the best interests of the military and the best interests of the country? I think not.”

He added: “Soldiers, unfortunately, like it or not, have engaged in this type of behavior in the past. Will they in the future, if they remove this statute? I don’t know.”

Perkins said there was no attempt to remove the UCMJ repeal provision from the bill, which Perkins had expected the Senate to approve.

Now that it has passed, however, the Senate version will have to go to a conference committee, and Perkins predicts there will be several sticking points with the House.

“The House in their version of the defense authorization, reinforced the Defense of Marriage Act, saying that there is a military DOMA as well, prohibiting same-sex marriage on military bases – something the Department of Defense is pushing for,” he said.

“And now this is an added concern, that sodomy has been removed, and as we have discovered, that bestiality–the prohibition against it–has been removed from the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So yes, the House will have problems with this bill.”

Does this mean that our military canines could be in harms way of being raped… by our own soldiers? Will there be an upsurge in military members owning dogs-or whatever? Probably not… sickos are sickos, but instead of stopping them, we are now encouraging them.

The bigger question is exactly how depraved is our Congress?  What happened to the Judeo-Christian principles that America was founded on?  Bestiality is a Biblical perversion! And is our tolerance of Progressive Secularism and Atheism and our movement away from God and his teachings put us where we are as a nation, as a people and as individuals?  Anne Graham Lotz, daughter of Pastor Bill Graham, believes so and said so in an interview after the 9/11 attacks.

Dog Killers Convicted For Murdering Navy Seal Hero’s Beloved Companion

Marcus Luttrell, a highly decorated Navy Seal and author of “Lone Survivor,” is still hurting three years after the murder of his beloved Yellow Labrador, DASY, by a group of thugs in Texas.

Today, Luttrell has received some measure of closure, as two of the perpetrators who shot and killed his beloved companion have been sentenced to prison time.

Luttrell, a true American hero who was the lone survivor from his fire team after an insurgent attack in Afghanistan, took the stand Thursday in the “cruelty to non-livestock animals trial” of Alfonso Hernandez, one of the two accused in the case.

Hernandez was found guilty of a state felony by a Walker County jury.

Marcus Luttrell

Another suspect, Michael Edmonds, pleaded guilty to the same state charge two days prior and admitted he was the one who fired the shot that killed DASY.

The night of the killing in April of 2009, Luttrell said he “heard a single gunshot, grabbed his pistol and ran next door to his mother’s residence to check on her. He then made his way down to the roadway, crawled underneath a fence and saw DASY had been shot.”

“I saw my dog in a ditch and two men standing outside the car,” Luttrell said, with his new service dog by his side on the stand. “I could hear them laughing.”

Law enforcement officers eventually caught up to the car with Luttrell’s help.

“I wanted to take a shot at the driver, but I figured if I missed and shot out the back window, I would not be able to catch them,” he added.

DASY given to Luttrell by friends to help him cope with the emotional and physical injuries he sustained while fighting in both the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters as a Navy Seal. She was by his side in Texas for four years.

Her name is an acronym of the initials of Luttrell’s team members who were killed in the firefight he described in “Lone Survivor.”

Edmonds and Hernandez, who was charged as an accomplice, will have to wait for a pre-sentence investigation to be conducted before a punishment is handed down, which is expected to take place in February, according to the Huntsville Item.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of up to two years in a state facility and a $10,000 fine.

Here is a clip from 2009 in which Glenn Beck interviews Luttrell, who tells the story of his beloved canine companion’s murder, including his gut-wrenching statement that “I consider that dog like a daughter to me:”

Video: Marcus Luttrell’s Dog Murdered by Punks in Texas (April 5, 2009) PART 1

Uploaded by che10967 on Apr 7, 2009

On April 5, 2009, four teenage males approached Luttrell’s property and fatally wounded his dog, Dasy, with a .357 Magnum revolver at approximately 1 A.M. Each letter of the name "Dasy" represents one of the fallen members of his team. She was given to him in recovery to help him through rehabilitation. Luttrell proceeded to track the individuals through four counties in his truck until Texas Rangers apprehended the individuals. Upon arrest, the suspects verbally threatened Luttrell’s life and taunted him. Alfonso Hernandez was arrested on-scene and charged with animal cruelty whilst Michael Edmonds has not yet been charged.

Today on Glenn Becks show, he had former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell on to talk about what happened to him last week. You see it seems some dumb-ass punks were driving the Texas countryside, summarily executing dogs.

Marcus chased these punks over four counties, and he nearly shot the driver. Finally the Rangers caught up with these punks in Huntsville, TX and the idiots in handcuffs were laughing about it. They said they would also kill Marcus. Do these douchebags not know about Marcus?

Dickhead Alfonso Hernandez was charged with Cruelty to Animals and is facing up to two years in prison, and dickhead #2, Michael Edmonds, is currently on the run.

Sample Comments:

  • What impresses me even more about this American hero is that he didn’t shoot them. He is a better man than I am for having the ability to restrain himself & not shoot them. Just an amazing man. He is the true definition of a man too. I wish him & his wife all the happiness they deserve.
  • BASTARDS
  • As another dog lover, that story of Marcus’s chase of those dog killers was beyond believe, when Glenn told it and played the 911 tapes etc.
I wonder why it took so long to get justice for Dasy.
It’s not like there was any question of what they had done. It’s too bad Marcus didn’t catch them before the law got them stopped. I’m sure he would have provided a little justice of his own, and very well deserved.

This article does not give the actual sentence, too bad. It seems killing dogs is going out of fashion since Vick was sent away, but now he’s an adored hero for throwing a football around for millions each year. I will never forget or forgive Vick.

  • These Bastards killed one of his friends, a family member of a man who served to keep us free… who were willing to give it all.  The dog herself served in her own way and these leaches, who only take, killed her.
  • Whatever sentence they got was not enough… It never is.  Remember the gal who cooked her friend’s kitten alive? She face a 10-year Sentence. She only got 1-year.  These people virtually always go on to be serial abusers of spouses, children, other pets and animals and to some degree most people they encounter.
