For the squeamish souls out there, it would be extremely rare to become ill from a (your or a known) dog licking or kissing you, especially if they are healthy and the skin/area they are licking or kissing is unbroken, healthy skin.  In fact, there is evidence that dog saliva itself does have antiseptic properties and wound licking is an instinctive response in humans and many other animals. Dogs, cats, rodents and primates all lick wounds.  And lysozyme, which is naturally present in dog saliva, keeps a mouth clean(er) by neutralizing bacteria. Communal licking is actually common in several primate species.

Why Do Dogs Lick People?

*Certain breeds of dogs, like Dachshunds, are fastidious lickers by nature.

Most dogs are so intent on the licking process that you know there has to be a good reason for doing it.

Some people say the dog’s licks are canine kisses that prove the dog likes or loves you. Fido is showing you that he cares about you. While this may be one reason that dogs lick people, it is clearly not the only reason why they perform this act.

Another theory is that dogs lick you because they were taught to do so by their mother from birth. Female dogs that give birth lick the new puppies to stimulate them to start breathing and to clean them up. Licking is important to the survival of puppies. The licking process is a natural instinct that they quickly learn from their mothers.

Licking is also a submissive gesture. In the wild, the more subordinate dogs will lick the more dominant ones. This helps to maintain harmony among the members of the pack. By licking you, the dog is showing you that you are the dominant being and you are in charge.

Another reason that dogs lick humans is to gather information about them. Dogs use the scent receptors located in their nose and mouth to process information about a person. A person who is secreting sweat from his or her body is actually unknowingly sending information about him or herself to the dog. This is one reason why a human’s feet are so attractive to a dog. Human feet contain many sweat glands. Eccrine glands release moisture that contains salts, water and waste products. Some dogs love the taste of salt.

Sebaceous glands, which are found near hair follicles, release sebum. The combination of the sweat and sebaceous gland secretions provide a lot of detail about you to an inquisitive dog that can tell if you are afraid, stressed or happy.

Dogs also enjoy licking because the act releases endorphins that allow the dog to feel pleasure and a sense of security and comfort.

In some cases, a dog will go all out to lick his or her owner’s face, hands or legs when strangers are around. Experts believe that this could be the dog’s way of showing that you are important to them and that they care more about you than they do the stranger.

While dogs do have good reasons for licking people, some folks don’t understand nor do they care to try to grasp why they are being slobbered on. It is important to ( at least attempt to) train your dog in a manner that he or she does not get carried away with the tendency to lick people, or at least temper their licking… but if your dog is one of the big licking breeds or suffers from hyperactivity, ADD, OCD , or ADHD tempering their love or obsession may be the best you can do.

We have Chihuahuas and Chiweenies (Chihuahua-Dachshund mix) and the Chiweenies are all big lickers and kissers, especially our Princess who suffers from ADHD.  And with all that licking going on, nobody has ever gotten sick; they are the cleanest dogs ever and the wounds they lick on themselves or humans always seem to heal much quicker than wounds normally do.

*Every breed of dog has their own positives, negatives and dominant traits.  It is important to do a little research before you choose a pet and like with human children once you have a furkid it is time to learn to love them in spite of their peccadilloes and your former expectations.

Angel… Our Mama Turns 10-Years-Old Today

Image

Image

Our Angel, a half-long-haired, half short-haired, light red and white, fawn-face Chihuahua stole our hearts and literally saved my life, or at least my sanity, during a very dark time for me.  Angel is the mama and the alpha dog at our house and of our little pack of Chihuahuas and Chiweenies.

According to her papers, Angel was born in Oklahoma on May 3rd and ten weeks later had made her way to our home and into our hearts.

Baby Angel

My husband was allergic to everything with fur and feathers.   But when our daughter was young we gave in starting with hamsters, mice, rats, geckos, lizards, fish, turtles… and then birds.  Then our daughter came home with a dog, Angel, while she was working part-time at a pet store, the summer after her first year of college.  She was supposed to be earning a little pocket money for the next year. Instead she pretty much spent all she earned and came home with a papered Chihuahua at the height of the Chihuahua craze… who became our Angel.

My husband said, “no way… absolutely not!” Our daughter was going back to the dorms and he was allergic, so he took Angel right back to the store.  They wouldn’t take her back because our daughter had signed the contract and they had given up a full paying customer to let her buy Angel at the employee discount, less than half of what they had had an actual customer for.  And of course, our daughter went back to school and the dorms about a month later with Angel in tow insisting she could sneak her in and keep her there. Less than an hour after her arrival at school with her 4-legged roommate, we were on our way to pick Angel up.  My husband went through 18-months of allergy shots after that so we could keep her.

A year later our daughter was off sailing around the world with the Semester at Sea program.  When she got back mid-year, she was assigned a lulu-bell for a roommate and bargained with us to get an off-campus apartment a semester early. She wasn’t there a month… when she brought home a Chiweenie puppy, Apachi, who was being given away outside the pet store, near school, where she had just gotten a part-time job after returning from her sail.  A pet store job is never a good idea for her.  Major Problem… it was a no pet apartment and we had signed a year’s lease.

Not long after getting Apachi, our daughter’s colitis flared up to an extreme level (I tend to think some vaccines that they got overseas might have exacerbated her condition adding to some stress in her life at the time and too much partying during that period and trip). After a stint at an alternative care facility, in an attempt to avoid radical surgery, she unfortunately ended up having to have 2 major surgeries and I spent a total of 54-days (24/7) in the hospital sleeping on a cot in her room, with her.  My husband, who was home with Angel and Apachi, visited daily.  With all that was going on we really didn’t think about the fact that neither 6 month old Apachi nor Angel had been fixed.  Angel was the best tempered Chihuahua with a really easy going disposition and everyone had said, if we could breed her with a like-type male, they’d love to have a puppy.  So I was looking for a mate for her and Apachi was just a baby,  and taking him in to be neutered just got lost in all the goings on.

Image

Next thing we knew… we had 4 puppies: Goji Angelina, Magnum, and Princess (As Pictured Below)

Image

Angel was a natural and terrific Mom who took great care of her little brood and Apachi watched over them from somewhat of a distance… until they were weaned, at which point he took over.

The boy pups (Magnum and Goji) and Angelina went to new homes at 10-weeks of age and we decided to keep Princess, our ADHD girl…  Then a few weeks later Angelina came back to us, because her new family couldn’t keep her and we had requested that if anyone who took a puppy had problems that we would get them back.  Long story short… we kept Angelina too and that is how we went from birds, turtles and rats, at the time, to 4-dogs and a fish who survived being fed to our turtles.

Gentle Giant… Befriends Some Cuddly Chicks

The unlikely friendship between a golden retriever and flock of fluffy chicks is revealed in a series of close-up photos

Los Angeles-based photographer Candice Sedighan, 21, decided to demonstrate just how ‘gentle’ her pet dog Champ is, by letting him loose with a group of newly-hatched birds.

In one of her images the canine is seen patiently modeling a top hat and, incredibly, a little yellow chick perches on top wearing a matching piece of miniature head gear.

Miss Sedighan said the chick’s hat came from a Lego set.

She taped the accessory to string and balanced it over the animal’s head to give the appearance of it being worn.

In another shot Champ is is seen lovingly nuzzling his newfound friends – which were rescued from a hatchery – being careful not to squash them with his paws or torso.

Miss Sedighan said that ‘this didn’t happen overnight’ and it took years of training to make Champ well-tempered.

She explains on Facebook: ‘There was an incident years ago when my parakeet got loose in the house and Champ "caught it" for me, resulting in an emergency visit to the vet and some stitches for the poor bird.

‘With years of training and our ever growing trust, here he is with some baby chicks.

‘The chicks seemed to really like to burrow in his fur for some extra warmth!’

Miss Sedighan started taking pictures of Champ eight years ago when he was aged three and now he has become the star of her Facebook and Instagram feeds.

Along with chicks he has also posed up with babies and most recently butterflies – even allowing one to perch on the end of his nose.

San Diego Zoo’s New baby gorilla has pneumonia… Baby Battling Back

Yahoo: SAN DIEGO (AP) — A baby gorilla delivered by a rare emergency cesarean section last week at the San Diego Zoo has pneumonia and is receiving round-the-clock care.

Zoo spokeswoman Christina Simmons the female gorilla was receiving oxygen and other treatment on Tuesday. She says the gorilla is sleeps a lot but is getting stronger day by day and vets are cautiously optimistic about her condition.

The medical team includes both vets and specialists in human neonatal care.

The gorilla was born March 12 and underwent surgery last Friday for a collapsed lung. It’s unclear whether she contracted pneumonia before or after birth.

The mother gorilla, an 18-year-old named Imani, had never given birth. The zoo says the C-section, rare for a gorilla, was performed because she was in distress after going into labor.
